"Fire," said Luka Sabbat, describing Christina Aguilera's impending performance at the annual Harper's Bazaar Icons by Carine Roitfeld blow-out at The Plaza. (Note: The Cool Teen™ and "Grown-ish" actor was born in 1997, two years before "Genie in a Bottle" was released.)

But the real fire situation was happening on the landing outside the main ballroom, as not-so-alleged-anymore nemeses Cardi B and Nicki Minaj physically clashed at fashion week's biggest, most glamorous and celebrity-filled event — which TMZ conveniently caught on video. Reportedly, the "Bodak Yellow" artist approached Minaj's table to "address" some issues, and a member of the latter's entourage elbowed Cardi B's face, causing a visible lump on her forehead.

The altercation then spilled onto the landing, with multiple security guards and event staffers intervening and physically separating both groups, Cardi B launching a chunky red platform shoe at Minaj (but missing) — while the target "didn't flinch" — and the former being escorted out of the party sans shoes. Sources who witnessed the melée also noted aggressive hair pulling and Cardi B's red ruffled Dolce & Gabbana gown being ripped down the back exposing her undergarments (one observer mentioned a flash of butt-cheek). Quickly afterward, the rapper addressed her grievances, both professional and personal, with Minaj via Instagram

So there's that. However, inside the party, most of the fashion luminaries and Hollywood celebrities, including Gigi and Bella Hadid, Caitlyn and Kendall Jenner, Presley Gerber, Ashlee Simpson, Tiffany Haddish and every major model imaginable, from Christie Brinkley to Duckie Thot, seemed none the wiser. They were both excited to schmooze with their equally-as-fabulous friends and to see Aguilera perform her classics in a deconstructed, chain-embellished pin-striped look, complete with chunky platform boots (she's still got it).

"When we were growing up, [the fashion] was very much influenced by her and Britney [Spears]," said Suki Waterhouse. "Her really low-slung jeans — the hip huggers — which I miss." "Claws" actress Karrueche Tran is more a fan of singer's memorable 2002 look, also an enduring Halloween costume to this day (see: Kylie Jenner in 2016). "I love Christina's chaps in the 'Dirrty' video," she said, following Aguilera's performance.

Low-rise, hipbone-baring and possibly underwear-exposing jeans, which designers are threatening to bring back, seemed to be the most fondly nostalgic early-2000s fashion trend amongst the party-goers. Fenty model and entrepreneur Leomie Anderson liked to wear hers with some extra, and very early-aughts, flair: "Belly chains, because everybody loved a belly chain, and also a high-rise thong with low-waist jeans — and a rhinestone," said the Brit, with a nostalgic smile.

Sabbat had a particular person — and sister of fellow party-goer — in mind for the trend. "Paris Hilton wearing low-waisted, bleached and super-washed jeans — with no underwear — and tiny T-shirts, those were the most iconic things of all time," said Sabbat. (And, no, he wouldn't spill any tea on what will happen between his "Grown-ish" character, who's essentially him, Luca, and Yara Shahidi's Zoey, in season two. "Just wait for season two. I want you to watch it. I can't give it up!")

Actress, singer, dancer and general entertainment multi-hyphenate, Carmen Electra probably has the best memories of pushing the envelope, fashion-wise, during the late '90s and early 2000s, when she dominated red carpet roundups.

"It's so funny because the MTV Video Music Awards were all about being a rebel and not following the rules and it was a scary moment to be part of the first group to step onto that carpet wearing like super revealing dresses," recalled Electra, wearing a strapless black gown detailed with a statement bow and two discreet cutouts. "I remember there were a couple dresses that I wore to the awards, which were just shocking. It was scandalous back then. You would almost get on the worst-dressed list like that. Because of that, it scares a lot of people into being not being who they are and not showing their character, even if it's outrageous or different from anyone else. It kind of shuts you down."

"I feel like today, things have changed so much and everyone's in those cut-out dresses. Everyone is showing a little bit more. I'm looking at every dress — and that dress — would have been scandalous in the late '90s or early 2000s," she added, pointing to a guest taking photos near the Instagram-friendly entrance. "It would have been like — gasp — a fashion 'no-no.' I love that things are coming full circle."

Of course, the early 2000s were also filled with some wardrobe regrets. "I have so many," said Waterhouse. "I refused to get out of a spacesuit from 'Jigsaw' for years. My mom hid it. She cut it up. I used to really like things that made noise and anything that was, like, waterproof."

"I used to wear a lot of mesh and platform shoes," said Christian Siriano, taking a break from prepping his spring 2019 runway show, right before rushing back to his atelier a few blocks away. "I thought I was a raver, but I wasn't."

"I used to only wear jean shorts and cowboy boots, living in Arkansas," said Hart Denton, a.k.a. the Chic Cooper imposter on "Riverdale," perhaps not realizing that he was ahead of the fall 2018 season's Western trend. "I didn't know what fashion was until three days ago, when I arrived for my very first Fashion Week." Although, being on the hit CW series, he's probably used to the drama, which was happening right outside IRL.

This Ginger Turmeric Water Kefir Is a Miracle Worker for Gut Health

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Research over the last few decades has revealed that the health of our gut microbiome has a far-reaching and profound impact on our overall health. One way (of many!) to foster a happy gut microbiome is to eat fermented foods.

Fermented foods are rich in probiotics, AKA beneficial bacteria, and can be highly nutritious additions to your diet because they support digestive health, immunity, detoxification and overall well-being.

The primary benefits of fermented foods are:

  • Pre-digestion of foods making the nutrients more bioavailable
  • Generation of additional nutrients (such as B vitamins, amino acids, etc.) or removal of anti-nutrients from foods (such as phytates, oxalic acid, etc.)
  • Detoxification support

There are a multitude of fermented foods and beverages to choose from. Almost every culture around the world has one! Some of the common ones you may have come across are sourdough bread, miso, tempeh, poi, sauerkraut, kimchi, kvass, kombucha, yogurt, kefir…just to name a few!

One of my favorite ferments is water kefir. It’s a probiotic beverage made using water kefir grains or a kefir starter culture. The culture consists primarily of lactic acid producing bacteria and some beneficial yeasts.

This Ginger Turmeric Water Kefir Is a Miracle Worker for Gut Health
You may know of kefir, which is a dairy-based beverage traditionally made with cow’s milk, however water kefir is completely dairy-free and is typically made using sugar water, coconut water or fruit juice. Water kefir is rich in amino acids, enzymes, vitamins and minerals so having a small cup each day is a delicious way to boost gut health!

The simplest water kefir recipe is to mix ½ cup of sugar in 4 cups of lukewarm water in a mason jar, along with some (optional) fresh or dried fruit. Add the kefir grains or kefir starter culture and let ferment for 1-2 days. While this concoction is simple yet delicious and beneficial, below is a water kefir recipe that takes the health benefits to new heights with the addition of two powerhouse anti-inflammatory ingredients: ginger and turmeric.

This Ginger Turmeric Water Kefir Is a Miracle Worker for Gut Health

  • 3 cups raw coconut water (I use Harmless Harvest)
  • 1/2 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon peeled and freshly grated ginger root
  • 1 tablespoon peeled and freshly grated turmeric root or 1 ½ teaspoons ground turmeric
  • 1 packet water kefir starter (I use this one)
  1. Add the coconut water and orange juice to a saucepan and very gently heat to lukewarm, or about 90ºF.
  2. Into a quart-sized mason jar, add the coconut water and orange juice mixture together with the contents of one foil packet of kefir starter.
  3. Add ginger and turmeric.
  4. Stir to mix well. Put lid on mason jar.
  5. Let this mixture ferment at room temperature (72-75ºF) for 24 hours.
  6. Remove the lid and taste. For a tangier drink, let sit for another 12-24 hours.
  7. When you’re happy with the flavor, stir again, put on the lid and place into the refrigerator.

Note: In your refrigerator, fermentation continues but chilling will slow down the fermentation process. Enjoy within 2-3 weeks!

This Ginger Turmeric Water Kefir Is a Miracle Worker for Gut Health
The great thing about water kefir is that you can keep it going and going. One packet of kefir starter can be used an average of seven times. After you’ve made your initial batch and are getting towards the end of your jar, reserve six tablespoons of water kefir which can be used to ferment 1 quart of liquid for your next batch. You can use the same recipe as above or try something new.

Have fun and good luck! Don’t worry–it’s almost impossible to mess this up!

You Can Buy a Copy of Meghan Markle's Second Wedding Dress for $45

It's been six months since Meghan Markle's royal wedding, but no one has forgotten her two stunning wedding dresses. Her second gown, by Stella McCartney for the reception, was a fan favorite—due to its instant popularity with onlookers, the designer announced she would sell a handful of replicas for $4,700 a pop. We've seen some halter-neck styles on the bridal runways since, but it's about to reach a new level of ubiquity, thanks to Cardi B favorite FashionNova.

Not-so-subtly named the Royal Debut Dress, FashionNova has released its own version of Markle's reception gown for the jaw-dropping price of $44.99. It's a creamy, off-white dress with a high neck and flowing trumpet skirt—except without the upon-request price tag.

Though we really got only a glimpse of Markle's custom Stella McCartney look when she was exiting Windsor Castle for her wedding reception at Frogmore House, it was enough to make an impression. FashionNova's dupe is already sold out in all sizes except for large, 2X, and 3X.

Lucy Hale Thought Aria Montgomery Was "A" in "Pretty Little Liars"

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Pretty Little Liars may have ended in summer 2017, but the Freeform show, its cast, and the irresistible drama of Rosewood are never far from our thoughts. We’re not alone, either, because apparently PLL star Lucy Hale, AKA Aria Montgomery, has been thinking about the show too.

Lucy stopped by BuzzFeed for an interview to talk about “first times,” and one of the things that came up in the Q&A session was the identity of the villainous “A,” who tormented Aria, Spencer, Emily, Hanna, and Alison. The identity of “A” was one of the major secrets of the show, though any PLL fan could tell you there were plenty to be had.

Surprisingly, Lucy thought that Aria herself was going to be revealed as “A” when the show wrapped. “Honestly, I thought it was Aria. I thought for the whole eight seasons that they were eventually going to make Aria ‘A,’” she told BuzzFeed. “There were so many things that, like, led up to it. She was always missing in action. I was wrong."

Spoiler alert: “A” was revealed to be a few people: Mona Vanderwaal, CeCe Drake, and “A.D.,” AKA Alex Drake, Spencer’s (British) twin sister. According to Lucy, the main cast all wanted to be “A,” but it was not to be. "I wanted Aria to be 'A'. I think we all wanted to be the bad guy,” she said.

Lucy shared a few more PLL secrets during her interview, including that her only memory of shooting the pilot was that it was very cold outside and “our mouths were numb.” Yikes! She added that the iconic “shh!” image was a total fluke; the photog threw out the idea, Lucy did it, and that last shot taken ended up being the image most closely associated with PLL. (The main cast even got Shh!-inspired tattoos when the show wrapped.)

If this interview has you missing PLL, don’t worry! Its spinoff, The Perfectionists, airs on March 20 on Freeform. Aria and “A” may not be there, but we’ve got a feeling there will be more than a few secrets to spare regardless.

Delicate vellum with a hand painted magnolia branch illustration. Pillowy handmade paper and envelopes with wax seals. Romantic calligraphy letterpress printed with care. Every single detail sings in these romantic calligraphy wedding invitations on handmade paper by Aileen of Plume Calligraphy. Take a look below – you’ll see what I mean!

Romantic Calligraphy Wedding Invitations on Handmade Paper by Plume Calligraphy

From AileenThis invitation suite is a full calligraphy design featuring large looping descenders and elegant flourishes. This modern, yet romantic calligraphy style is complimented beautifully by Pressed Paper Co‘s soft, naturally deckled handmade paper. Adding transparent vellum in the form of envelopes and floral illustrated overlays creates contrast between the organic nature of the handmade paper and the clean modern appeal of vellum.

Romantic Calligraphy Wedding Invitations on Handmade Paper by Plume Calligraphy

I originally hand painted the Magnolia illustration on vellum for a styled shoot and found that it’s become one of our most popular details couples add to their suite design. We’ve been able to produce this pieces for clients with the help of Sibylle of Hubbub Paper Co., who letterpress printed the illustration in white ink on vellum. Once printed each piece is hand painted to show slightly transparent white brush strokes. The vellum takes on a slightly ruffled effect when painted, which we love as it adds depth and shadow especially when styling for flat lay photographs.

White wax seals featuring our Magnolia design help to add a fresh aesthetic while keeping the overall scheme neutral to emphasize the textures and design elements.

Romantic Calligraphy Wedding Invitations on Handmade Paper by Plume Calligraphy

Styling this suite on a dark, moody background gives it organic flair and highlights the transparency of the vellum, the contrasting white details and the deckled edges of the handmade paper. We love creating designs that are mainly neutral and can be altered by the choice of background. Especially when designing for styled shoots, we find that giving the design elements simple, tone on tone schemes helps to allow the photographer or stylist the flexibility to work within their overall color scheme.

This design is now available through our Semi-Custom Collection as the Winsome Suite! We absolutely love the romantic look of a fully handwritten invitation suite and we wanted to offer this option to our semi-custom couples! We can’t wait to see all the ways this suite will be personalized by our clients!

September 2018 Wish List 2018

The September Wish List

Floral jumpsuit by Diane von Furstenberg | Vintage-inspired jacket by Warehouse | Lace-trim camisole by H&M | Queen Margaret shoulder bag by Gucci | Leopard print boots by Topshop | Print midi skirt by GANNI | Rock ‘N’ Roll knit by Hush | Leather belt by Isabel Marant | Floral midi dress by Monsoon

I’m sure you’re all able to quote The September Issue from start to finish, so will instantly recognise the quote, “September is the January of fashion.” But it’s true, isn’t it? September always feels like a fresh start, and it’s the perfect time to revamp your look.

Case point: I’m planning to get my hair cut into a long bob, later this month. And once that hair transformation is complete I’ll give my wardrobe a bit of a makeover too – adding in  clean lines, darker tones and a mix of textures.

Right now I can’t take my eyes off Topshop’s leopard print ankle boots. They’d look fantastic paired with skinny jeans, an oversized khaki shirt and Warehouse’s vintage-inspired textured jacket. I’m also coveting Hush’s “Rock ‘N’ Roll” knit, which I’d pair with midi skirts and biker jackets.

And, if money was no object, I’d be racing to Gucci’s Bond Street boutique to purchase their elegant Queen Margaret shoulder bag in red, white and navy blue. It’s sure to elevate even the most basic of outfits…

What’s on your September 2018 wish list?

Light Wave House

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Perched above Byron Bay, the Light Wave House is the ultimate hangout spot on the coast of Australia. The project consists of a cabana, swimming pool, and landscape set along The Lighthouse Walk. The structure's sculpted silhouette is like a piece of artwork set on the hillside to captivate the walkers that travel the busy, public walkway. Its folded form is clad in native Blackbutt, giving the shelter a warm contrast to the vibrant blue waters of the infinity pool. Inside, the cabana houses a shower, bathroom, and holding tank that collects rainwater from the roof to fill the pool. Its cantilevered design creates a balcony over the sloped site, framing in a piece of the waterfront while the pool offers expansive panoramas of the entire shoreline and horizon beyond.

Expiration Date of a Cosmetic Formula

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)
Article by: Perry Romanowski

One of the more frequent questions received here at Chemists Corner is about the expiration date of products. Formulators, and beauty product consumers alike, want to know how long a formula will last. Unfortunately, there is no simple answer but here are some guidelines to determining the expiration date of a cosmetic formula.

expired cosmetics

What is expiring?

Before we can talk about an expiration date, it makes sense to first define what is meant by “expiring.”  When it comes to cosmetics, there are various things that indicate a product has expired.

Continues to work – A good indication of whether a cosmetic has expired is if it continues to work. If a product stops providing the benefit for which you use it, then it is expired. If a shampoo doesn’t clean your hair or a moisturizer doesn’t sooth your skin, the product has expired. However, the way that most cosmetic products are formulated, it’s pretty rare that a product stops working completely. Even a 10-years-old body was will still clean skin to some extent.

Has acceptable aesthetics – Perhaps a more important indication of whether a product has expired is whether it continues to be aesthetically pleasing to use. Over time, there can be chemical reactions going on in your product which can result in color changes, odor changes, pH drift, viscosity changes, texture changes and more. While these products might technically continue to work, they aren’t as pleasing to use as they were when you first bought them, so the manufacturer would consider them “expired.”

Meets specifications – Since aesthetics is a subjective characteristic, it would be difficult to define an expiration date based on that. For this reason characteristics of products are quantified through testing and a specification (numerical range) is set. That way you can say a product has expired if it no longer meets the specifications originally set out. So, if the viscosity of a body wash had a specification range of  5000 cps – 8000 cps, the product can be considered expired if the viscosity range ever goes higher or lower than the specification.

How do determine cosmetic expiration dates

By defining an expiration point as the time when the product no longer meets specifications, you can then run a test to determine an approximate expiration date. The industry standard way of doing this is called stability testing.

Stability testing – Stability testing involves an experiment in which you take samples of your product and put them at different environmental conditions for a set period of time. The conditions vary in temperature and light levels and are meant to simulate what happens to the product during its life cycle from shipping, to store shelves, to consumer’s bathrooms.

At select intervals you evaluate your samples for various physical, chemical and performance characteristics to see how they have changed. If the changes are minimal according to your company standards, then the product is still good.  When characteristics of the product go outside of the specified ranges, then your product can be said to have “expired.”  See this post for more information on cosmetic stability testing.

Types of products – The exact type of characteristics you measure in a stability test will vary depending on the type of product but for most cosmetics the following are usually tested.

  • Color
  • Odor
  • pH (aqueous based products)
  • Viscosity
  • Microbial challenge testing

Product expectations

Manufacturers and consumers likely have different expectations for how long a product should last. For most products, the industry standard is that it should be stable for at least one year. This means you shouldn’t expect to see any changes for characteristics outside the specification range after one year of testing. Of course, if the product isn’t selling fast enough the manufacturer would like this date extended but they also strive to have all inventory sold before one year.

Consumer expectations – Consumers are a bit different in that they want to have products that will last for as long as they have it. They don’t really want to buy a product that will “go bad” in a short amount of time. Actually, I don’t think they want products that will go bad for however long they have the product. This can be a really long time. In fact, I’ve got a men’s hair styling product that is at least 10 years old. I still use it on occasion because it smells fine and still works. This is why I make a terrible target consumer for hair products.

Government expiration expectations –  It’s interesting to note that in the US there is no specific requirement to put an expiration date on a cosmetic product. It is a law however, that the manufacturer has to run tests to determine the shelf life to demonstrate the product is safe to use.  In the EU there are more stringent requirements for product expiration dates. If a product has an expected shelf life of longer that 30 months you must do testing to demonstrate how long the product will last after opening. If the product has a shorter than 30 month shelf life, you must put a “best before” date on the package.

Expiration of cosmetic products

As a formulator, it’s helpful to know that different products can have different expiration expectations. Or at least there is a consumer perception of cosmetic expiration. Expiration dating isn’t an exact science but here is a guideline you can follow for how long various products are expected to last.

  • 3 months – eye makeup
  • 6 months – Anti-aging creams, vitamin C products
  • 9 – 12 months – Cream color cosmetics, lip gloss
  • 12 months – powder color cosmetics
  • 24 months – shampoos, conditioners, body wash, moisturizers, most everything
  • longer – Anything that still smells & looks good (which probably won’t be much)

Jas Sum Kral CBD Cigar

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Traditionally planted in long, neat rows, the tobacco seeds that later became the harvest for this cigar are grown in the last remaining half acre of the Rainforest and scattered wherever sunlight can be found. After the harvest, the leaves are rolled by hand, fermented for six months, and then carried to the river, put into canoes, and rowed to the mainland before they are driven to port and shipped to Nicaragua. The result of this tedious process is an exceptional cigar with an open draw and hints of the environment where it originated. The minimalist smoke carries no label, opting instead for another piece of tobacco in its place.
